Katarina Kotselainen (b. 1982 in Tartu)

2006 EAA BA, 2010 EAA MA

I was born in a family, which members had always the skill of handicraft. I grew up in various Finnish cities and although thus I got used to travelling, I am most inspired of sentimentality in my creation. For me, jewellery is something very personal and related to memories of people, places and feelings. If my works arouse positive feelings also in the viewer, I am happy for being able to make somebody’s day a little better. I have studied in EAA and improved myself repeatedly in Germany and Norway. In the family I am surrounded by a jewellery mafia (as I joke myself), because my husband, father, brother and sister-in-law are also making jewellery. Since 2002 I have participated in exhibitions worldwide.- In the book “A-Gallery. Estonian art jewellery gallery for 20 years” (2014)

“I have an image of an old painting. There is a dignified lady with a fancy pearl necklace, which is fastened with a ribbon. I thought it was so nice, yet in reality I wanted to replace the simple ribbon with something more durable and everlasting. By making the ribbon in silver, I was also able to create an interesting technical solution.

Old pictures have always inspired me. This is also how the “Star” series began. The hairdo of Austro-Hungarian Empress Sissi (Elisabeth) was decorated with a row of stars. As a child, I adored the films made about her; most likely my love of all things German got its start from these films.” – Katarina Kotselainen at the A-Gallery exhibition MEMORY CARDS (2019)
