Kati Erme (b. 1976 in Tartu)

2001 EAA

I studied painting in Konrad Mägi painting studio in Tartu and graduated from the department of jewellery and blacksmithing in the Academy of Arts. I have participated in painting exhibitions in Tartu, Tallinn and Norway and in jewellery exhibitions in Tallinn and Vilnius. For A-Gallery I have made jewellery since 2006.

I like clear simple forms, ornament and natural motives. For me, creation is not an action with specific objective, but rather a lifestyle.- In the book “A-Gallery. Estonian art jewellery gallery for 20 years” (2014)

“In order to bring this one leaf to life in its chosen material, “something else” was needed, a mistake in the pattern, a digression, as often happens in life. The saw blade is concrete, a straight dash, it has nothing to add to the dialogue, it can be used to draw another leaf. It’s possible that I brought this leaf indoors attached to my heel and when I began to explore the mysterious zigzag pattern on the edge, I discovered the border with a new world.

When carried by the wind, these unique fingerprints of nature can also sometimes end up on bodies. They resemble long-forgotten Friday sauna evenings from childhood, when a companion, a lone leaf from the switch of birch branches, remained like a badge on your chest. Since ancient times, birch leaves have been known to have healing power and birch trees a surface cleaning property.” – Kati Erme at the A-Gallery exhibition MEMORY CARDS (2019)
