Fresh ones are soft pink to salmon and later harden to gray-brown crusts.<br \/>\n<strong>Ecology<\/strong>: This slime mold thrives on decaying wood, feeding on microorganisms and recycling nutrients back into the forest floor.<br \/>\n<strong>Story:<\/strong> Long ago, people believed these pink blobs were the spit of wolves. Today, children press them just to watch the \u201cmilk\u201d ooze out.
