Earrings NECTRIA CINNABARINA from the exhibition ORNAMENTS OF THE FOREST FLOOR

Coral Spot Fungus
Etymology: Cinnabarina refers to its brilliant cinnabar-red color, resembling the mineral used as pigment. Appearance: Tiny, rounded cushions in vivid coral-red, dotting dead branches like scattered beads.
Ecology: A weak parasite and decomposer, it attacks dead and dying branches of birch, maple, and other hardwoods.
Story: Though destructive to trees, its bright spots transform dull gray wood into a lively pattern. To walk in a damp forest and find its glowing coral is to see death dressed up in jewelry.
