Earrings LYCOGALA EPIDENDRUM from the exhibition ORNAMENTS OF THE FOREST FLOOR
Wolf’s Milk Slime
Etymology: The name comes from Greek lykos (wolf) and gala (milk), referring to the pink liquid inside the young spheres.
Appearance: Small, cushion-like fruiting bodies scattered across rotting logs. Fresh ones are soft pink to salmon and later harden to gray-brown crusts.
Ecology: This slime mold thrives on decaying wood, feeding on microorganisms and recycling nutrients back into the forest floor.
Story: Long ago, people believed these pink blobs were the spit of wolves. Today, children press them just to watch the “milk” ooze out. Neither plant, animal, nor true fungus, it occupies its own mysterious kingdom — a reminder that the forest holds lives beyond our categories.
