ONE TO MANY: A-Galerii Annual Jewellery Exhibition 2025

This year, the largest annual group exhibition of Estonian jewellery art turns its focus to values. At a time when value is so often reduced to numbers, the artists highlight other forms of worth – those shaped by collaboration, community, and the relationships that emerge in shared space. The exhibition brings together works by A-Galerii’s community alongside artists who have recently engaged with jewellery from new angles, creating a meeting point across generations and backgrounds.

The exhibition design by artist Karl Joonas Alamaa features soft figurative objects made from leftover garment textiles, combined with organic wooden and metal structures. It intertwines jewellery with sculptural forms and invites reflection on the role of jewellery amid the complexities of being human and living through sharply contrasting crises.

The title “One to Many” points to the tension between valuing uniqueness and universality, carrying an ironic undertone: whatever, just one among many. Each artwork becomes a small world of its own, a question and a possible answer. In a large group exhibition, seemingly similar parts multiply and individuality may blur, yet something distinctly original still emerges, offering new perspectives and unexpected shifts.

The exhibition is supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.

EDGE

Three jewellery artists, Katarina Kotselainen, Kalle Kotselainen and Jens A. Clausen came together in a forge in Tartu to craft knives, jewellery and other objects. They used different metals, such as Damascus steel, stainless steel and silver, but also wood, horn and bone. The title of the exhibition, “Tera/ Edge” has multiple meanings, with the Estonian word “tera” referring to the edge of a knife, as well as to the material left over in the process of forging. The small amount of surplus material cannot be made into a knife blade, but can be used for making other smaller objects and jewellery.

Katarina Kotselainen has studied at the Estonian Academy of Arts Department of Jewellery and Blacksmithing. Has exhibited in exhibitions around the world since 2001 and is member of the Estonian Artists Association since 2008.

Kalle Kotselainen has designed and crafted jewellery for over ten years. In 2019 he graduated from the blacksmithing program at the Vana-Vigala Technical and Service School.

Jens A. Clausen has studied at the Staatluche Zeichenakademie Hanau and since 2012  works at the  Estonian Academy of Arts Department of Jewellery and Blacksmithing as a goldsmith. He has been a member of the Estonian Artists Association since 2014 and a member of the Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts.

The stipend laureate for “Noor Ehe 2017” is Hanna-Maria Vanaküla

Hanna-Maria Vanaküla was chosen as this year’s laureate for the “Noor ehe 2017” stipend. The award was given on the 25th of October in the Great Guild Hall.

Kadri Mälk, estonian jewellery artist and academic, introduced Hanna-Maria Vanaküla as a second year graduate student whose special interest lay in optic glass. Hanna-Maria was also the only estonian artist to be chosen to exhibit her works in the annual Schmuck jewellery exhibition in Munich.

In addition to the main prize a special award was given to Jens Andreas Clausen for his heart-shaped jewellery. The work was first exhibited in A-gallery during the exhibition of Hearts curated by Katarina Kotselainen.

The Noor Ehe stipend was founded in 2008 by Kadri Mälk who is in the jury with Tanel Veenre, Piret Hirv and Kadri Karro.

In the previous years the stipend has been awarded to Ettel Poobus, Nils Hint, Urmas Lüüs, Sofia Hallik, Darja Popolitova, Maria Valdma and Kätrin Beljaev.
