Finissage & artist talk: Helen Clara Hemsley & Therese Mørch

On Saturday, February 26, we will celebrate the end of the first window exhibitions of the year in A-Gallery. As part of the finissage, there will be a public artist talk with Helen Clara Hemsley and Therese Mørch, who are the creators of the A-Gallery window exhibition TRACES IN TIME. The interview will be conducted by Urmas Lüüs, a jewellery artist and cultural researcher.

After the talk, there is time to converse and mingle in the cozy Saturday evening atmosphere of the finnisage. The artists will offer snacks and wine. The exhibition’s finnisage is a rare opportunity to experience the great creations of two extraordinary foreign artists in depth. The talk will be in English.

TRACES IN TIME is a display of exploration and the concept of the everyday in both artist’s works. Helen Clara Hemsley is originally from South Africa, but currently lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. Helen studied at Oxford Brookes University and the Institute for Precious Metals in Copenhagen and she holds a BA in Fine Art from the Glasgow School of Art. Her work has been exhibited in, among other countries, Denmark, China, Portugal, Australia, Germany and the US.

Helen’s works displayed at TRACES IN TIME reflect an odd sense of familiarity, but at the same time a perplexing feeling of not being completely sure why the objects or materials are so important, what they symbolise or where they come from. And then there is a feeling of sadness, and an almost desperate need to make things better again. All this happens over a long period of time, bearing witness to the joys and pain of teenage struggles, parents and parenthood, marriage, divorce and a constant desire to make, build and share.

Therese Mørch is from Denmark and lives in Copenhagen. Therese graduated from Cass School of art & Design and Royal College of Art, both in London. Her work has been exhibited in Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, France, Germany and in the UK.

In Therese’s exhibition pieces there is also a feeling of familiarity and the passing of time, and a beautiful fragility that draws the viewer in. Common to her works TRACES and TOUCHED is the sense of touch and tactility used as generators for creating contact. This may lead senses onto paths of proximity, intimacy, physicality, sentiment, totems, object relations and attachment. All are fragments of Therese’s on-going research in jewellery, which is often embodied in repetitive sculpt work, and corporeal representation with reference to ritual and spiritual prayer jewellery.

The exhibition is supported by the Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

The best VAULT exhibition of 2021 is Taavi Teevet’s SINGLE COPY

A-Gallery’s VAULT exhibition of the 2021 is Taavi Teevet’s SINGLE COPY! Congratulations to Taavi!

SINGLE COPY is a poetry collection that never left the print shop, since it was never printed – the poems were given the form of jewellery by combining the techniques of laser engraving and acid etching. This poetry collection can not be found on the shelves of bookstores and it is not available for loan at libraries. SINGLE COPY will not be read during boring bus rides or in parks on sunny days. This poetry collection existed on the walls of the VAULT of the A-Gallery throughout the period of the exhibition and was read by people who came to visit the show. The exhibition was held 29.10 – 26.11.2021.

Taavi Teevet (1996, Saaremaa) is a young metal artist focusing on the journey into his inner world and on analysing relevant sensorial experiences, related issues and discoveries. He has a Bachelor’s degree in jewellery and blacksmithing from the Estonian Academy of Arts. Teevet has shown his work both in Estonia and abroad and has participated in several performative projects.

The best VAULT exhibition has been chosen in A-Gallery since 2007, with the aim of recognizing the masterful achievements of artists in their work.

A-Gallery celebrates its 27th birthday today

The home of Estonian jewelry, A-Gallery, will be 27 years old today. As a jewelry store and exhibition space, A-Gallery represents more than a hundred professional jewelry artists.

“Founding A-Gallery was a bold undertaking in its time. With our enthusiasm, we were also a guide to other applied arts disciplines. Combining different generations of metal artists, offering equal sales opportunities and creative activities to everyone has been the key to A-Gallery’s strength and survival for many years,” says Ene Valter, the founder and chairman of A-Gallery.

A-Gallery was founded in 1994 by jewellery artists who run the gallery to this day. The founding meeting of the gallery took place at the end of 1993. There were 32 founding members, including Ene Valter, Ülle Kõuts, Urve Küttner, Andrei Balašov, Mari Pärtelpoeg and Aino Kapsta. Later, 48 artists in total acquired shares of the enterprise. On May 10, 1994, A-Gallery opened its doors in the building of the Estonian Artists’ Union on Hobusepea Street (current location of HOP-gallery) where it stayed until 2005.

In its current location, on the corner of Hobusepea and Pikk streets, A-Gallery has been located since 2005. Today, A-Gallery has become a unique meeting point where one can get acquainted with the creations of over a hundred different authors.

“For me, A-Gallery is a home of Estonian art jewelry and a place where my work meets different artists and generations. I would say that it is a perfect timeline, every visitor gets a nice overview,” says the artist Claudia Lepik.

Each handmade piece of jewelry in A-Gallery is unique and made with a masterful technique. What makes A-Gallery even more special is the fact that many artists create their pieces right above the gallery where many artists have their studios.
